Webinar: The impact of digital platforms and social media on freedom of expression and pluralism

The webinar shall start by exploring the foundations of freedom of speech on the Internet, the concept of ‘speech’ and the concept of social networks as a public forum.

 

The webinar shall start by exploring the foundations of freedom of speech on the Internet, the concept of ‘speech’ and the concept of social networks as a public forum.

The webinar shall further explore the legal basis for content censorship in comparative law, by referring to two main models – the US and the EU legislative approaches.

 

The speaker, who is an IP Law and Internet Law professor, shall analyze the US Section 230 provisions, on the one hand, and the EU legislation (Directive on electronic commerce; Directive on the digital single market; the Audiovisual Media Services Directive) on the other hand. The relevant case-law in both jurisdictions will also be examined.

 

The webinar will end with the assessment of the impact of digital platforms on the freedom of expression and pluralism.
