Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day
2023-03-19
March 23 marks Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day. The declaration on its establishment was adopted on March 12, 2007 by a unanimous decision of all members of the Hungarian Parliament. Four days later – on March 16, 2007 – such a resolution was adopted by acclamation by the Polish Parliament.
“Common fates, common heroes, common enemies and common friends, all of these have given rise to and perpetuated a genuine affection and deep friendship between the Polish and Hungarian peoples”, reads the resolution adopted in March 2007 by the Hungarian National Assembly and the Polish Sejm.
The text of the resolution cites historical events and figures that unite Poles and Hungarians: the reign of King Stefan Batory, who came from Hungary, when Poland was experiencing one of the most glorious periods in its history, the achievements of General Jozef Bem in the fight for Hungary’s freedom, and the Poles’ support for the 1956 anti-communist uprising in Budapest, which was suppressed by Moscow’s armed intervention.
There are many initiatives in both Poland and Hungary emphasizing Polish-Hungarian friendship. This includes economic, cultural and scientific cooperation. The Justice Institute is engaged in lively scientific cooperation by conducting research with Polish-Hungarian teams in prestigious projects: Polish-Hungarian Reaserch Platform and Central European Professors’ Network.
