„The Communist Crimes –Individual and State Responsibility” International Scientific Conference

On November 9-10, 2020, “The Communist Crimes – Individual and State Responsibility” International Scientific Conference was held online. The event was held as part of the: “Polish contribution to the development of international criminal law, including contribution to the trial of international crimes” Project, which was implemented by the Center for Strategic Analysis of the Institute of Justice.

 

The outstanding experts took part in the videoconference, representing renowned research centers, such as Moscow School of Economics (HSE); Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH); Macau University of Science and Technology; University of Durrës in Albania and the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

 

The conference was devoted to the subject of communist crimes in international terms and consisted of numerous subsections. The speakers pointed to the difficulties in judging communist criminals on the example of countries such as Albania, Hungary, Romania and Germany. During the conference, reference was also made to the criminal liability of members of communist parties and the Polish experience in adjudicating communist crimes before national courts was discussed. Legislative changes introduced after 2015 were also analyzed.

 

The conference also focused on presenting the current results of the project work and creating a platform for the exchange of views where the participants of the event could share their voice in the discussion.
